Chapter 11
C assie sat on a velvet-tufted seat next to the window overlooking the flower gardens. The daffodils were barely visible in the late afternoon mists as the sun began its descent. Golden light no longer filled the private parlor where Braeden had taken her to enjoy tea. A hush surrounded her and held her captive. She drew in a steadying breath.
Her reflection in the glass came into focus. The hasty trip to the modiste upon her arrival in Edinburgh a week ago had produced the pale pink satin gown she now wore. It was her only suitable attire until the rest of her clothes arrived.
Her less-than-feminine height compounded with the problem of long legs and arms made it impossible to find anything ready-made. Once again, she was an oddity.
She’d been somewhere outside Edinburgh for nine entire days, for her safekeeping, instead of at Amber Rose, where she desperately wanted to go. Rory Jameson had filled Braeden in at the rail depot about the events that had led her into Lord Hampstead’s care. But if she’d known she’d be kept a prisoner, she never would have asked her best friend’s brother to meet her.
Her eyes found Braeden Maxwell outside. He stood on the terrace dressed smartly in a dark suit and knotted black tie, holding a leather satchel, awaiting the men who had just arrived in the shiny black carriage to see her.
Braeden, her childhood hero.
From a long line of Scotsmen, he had roots buried deep in this country. He had been born at Amber Rose Castle in Stirling before traveling to America with his father when he was an adolescent. He’d distinguished himself as an American naval hero before he was twenty-one. He was steady, devoted to his family, a man who would never lie or cheat at cards, the opposite of everything Devlyn appeared to be.
Until now.
Now he was the man keeping her from leaving this despicable place. Though he had at least sent a telegram to her parents informing them of her whereabouts.
With a sigh, Cassie turned back into the drawing room. She’d been relieved to learn that Mary, Frankie, and her cello were with Sally Ann. Her staff of two had arrived safely with Lady Rose. She only wished that they were all together now and didn’t know why she was being kept apart from them. She suspected part of the reason had to do with the men who had just arrived.
Raised voices outside recaptured her attention. Braeden was speaking to a silver-haired man she didn’t recognize, but who made her uneasy. His demeanor reminded her too much of her father when he’d just heard bad news about the stock market. Though she couldn’t understand what was being said, she recognized the tone in which the words were exchanged.
Then, as if sensing her presence in the window, the group looked toward where she sat, their stern visages sending a quiver of alarm down her spine. Good heavens, they were talking about her! And Braeden’s manner made it obvious that he didn’t like what was being said.
